English Channel swimmer, marathon

and ultra-distance runner.

It’s one in the morning on an August night in Dover. Several

boats are bobbing about in the sea in a line parallel to and

just metres away from the stony shore of Shakespeare beach.

Greased up swimmers stand on the ladders at the back of the

boats, pausing for last minute photos. They smile smiles that belie the apprehension and nerves that grip their stomachs. The nausea they feel after the 15-minute journey from the marina to the beach is not welcome……..

Jersey….Situated just 18 miles from the coast of France, 40 minutes flying time from Gatwick and a manageable ferry trip from the UK south coast, Jersey is one of the best kept secrets in open water swimming. With stunning coastlines and beaches, fantastic restaurants and accommodation ranging from budget to five star, this nine by five mile island is an ideal destination for any solo traveller, couple or family with a passion for open water swimming…….

You made the phone calls, did the research, asked around

and finally, with the forms safely in the postman’s bag, it’s job

done – you have signed up for that swim. Whether it’s Windermere,Lake Zurich, the English Channel or one of the other big swims around the world, you are now dedicated to that frightening but inspiring goal. Whatever it takes you will prevail. No stone will be left unturned in the pursuit of your dream…..

This is my friend Wendy's two-way solo Channel swim in August 2013. I was privileged to be on her crew. It was an inspirational, extreme endurance achievement.
